What to Look for When Buying a Used Utility Trailer

Home 5 News 5 What to Look for When Buying a Used Utility Trailer

For many people, a utility trailer is not an everyday vehicle. Hence, most of them decide to purchase used ones as they are less expensive. While sometimes it is suitable for your finances, occasionally, second-hand utility trailers can add more expenses to your entire budget. You have to get repairs and upgrades done to make the utility trailer fully functional again. If you are considering purchasing a used trailer for frequent or occasional use, you should know about certain things to look for before writing the check.

Let us discuss some things you should look for when buying a used utility trailer-

#1- Inspect the Tires: Make sure the tires are correctly aligned. Check for cracks, plugged holes, and visible signs of wear and tear. Match the carrying capacity of the trailer and the size of the tires. If they do not match, it can significantly reduce the efficiency and capacity of the utility trailer. Tires are one of the most expensive vehicle parts, and replacing them can cost you some money.

#2- Examine the Trailer for Possible Repairs: Thoroughly check the frame of the trailer. If you encounter any visible signs of damage, it would mean the trailer was overloaded or not built correctly. Also, check the ramp and floor of the trailer for a strong build.

#3- Check Various Systems: A utility trailer should be in top shape with all its systems working efficiently. Check the brake shoe, pads, drums, rotors, and magnets of axles. See that the suspension is functional. Check the leaf springs and spring hangars for any damage as they indicate overloaded trailer and damaged axles. The axles should be in correct alignment as they can lead to uneven tire wear. The electrical system should be working. If the lights are not working, it may be due to a fused bulb or a blown fuse. It may also be caused due to wires shorting on the frame or incorrectly routed wires.

#4- Compare Your Options: When purchasing a used trailer, it is best to compare the prices of your various options. The price tagged on second-hand trailers is often very close to the cost of purchasing a new one with warranty coverage. To make the best decision, calculate the total cost of repairs and upgrades with the price of a used utility trailer.

#5- Check Previous Background: While purchasing a used utility trailer, you have to be prudent about the previous owners of the vehicle. The trailer should not be borrowed or stolen, and the person selling you must be the owner. Moreover, ensure that they are legally allowed to sell that specific vehicle, and no finance company owes any liens against it. The VIN on the trailer should match the paperwork. If not, it will be a sign that something is wrong.
