Trailer Type Buying Guide

Home 5 News 5 Trailer Type Buying Guide

Trailers are perfect for transporting cargo from one place to another, but there are dozens of different trailer types. It’s not always easy for the average trailer buyer to determine which trailer type would work best for their needs. That is why Silver Moon Trailers has created this guide to buying trailers by type.

General or Specialized?

All the different trailer types can be categorized as either general or specific. General trailers, while sporting features that might make them more or less suited to certain jobs, are still designed for general usage and can be used to transport a wide variety of different cargo types. Meanwhile, specialized trailers are meant to transport a specific type of cargo, often to the exclusion of other cargo types. For instance, dump trailers are very useful when you need to transport loose materials, though they might not be very useful for transporting other types of freight.

Decide the Hitch Style

Hitch style is another important factor to consider. Gooseneck hitches offer better control and stability, but require a tow vehicle that has a truck bed (such as a pickup truck). While bumper pull hitches don’t offer the same level of stability, they are also compatible with a wide variety of tow vehicles, meaning you can use almost anything to tow your trailer as long as the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is high enough. Bumper pull hitches are also very affordable, making them one of the more popular hitch types.

Consider Your Tow Vehicle

It’s also important to think about your tow vehicle. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) tells you how much a tow vehicle can safely haul. If the GVWR is too low and the trailer is too heavy, you might not be able to safely haul very much.
