Truck beds are great for increasing the carrying capacity of your vehicle, but the fact that they’re open to the elements can make them difficult to use during months when it’s raining or snowing.
If you’re transporting anything that’s vulnerable to the elements or can’t get wet, you’ll want to find a way to make sure it’s protected. You have several different options to choose from. We’ll discuss them below.
Tonneau Cover
Tonneau covers are perhaps the most common option for ensuring your items stay safe from the elements. They’re essentially lids designed to go on the top of your tonneau. If you choose this option, you’ll want to make sure the cover matches the dimensions of the truck bed.
As well, you should also keep in mind that these covers aren’t waterproof. In order to take the lid off and put it back on, the cover can’t be completely sealed. This means covers are good if you want to prevent your tools or other equipment from facing the worst of the elements, but they’re not good for items that needs to be kept completely dry.
Truck Cargo Bag
Truck cargo bags are another common option for keeping things dry in a truck bed because they’re made of weather-resistant material. If you choose this option, you’ll notice that these are often sold in a variety of different styles.
Pricing will vary from 100 to several hundred dollars. When choosing which one to go with, keep in mind that the cheaper materials may not hold up during severe weather events.
Tarp and Bungee
This is the simplest solution on the list, but that doesn’t make it any less effective. Tarp is sturdy and it holds up well against the elements.
You simply have to wrap the items you’re transporting in tarp, and then make sure the tarp is secured to the truck bed. If you’d prefer, rope or even duct tape can be a suitable replacement for bungee cords.
Truck Bed Riser
If the solution you choose for keeping water out of your truck bed isn’t waterproof, you may also want to get a truck bed riser. This way, any water that pools into your truck bed won’t pool on the truck bed riser.
This means you can use a cheaper solution to keep most water out of your bed, while ensuring any sensitive items aren’t covered in water by the time you reach your destination.
