Cargo trailers are great for moving from one residence to another. You can easily move a lot of belongings at once while keeping them safe and secure by using a cargo trailer. Of course, loading too much weight or forgetting to secure the cargo can lead to disaster. That’s why Silver Moon Trailers has created this list of moving tips for cargo trailer owners.
1. Don’t Overload Your Trailer
Moving into a new home typically involves transporting a truly massive amount of personal belongings, including furniture, clothing, decorations, etc. Even if you own a larger cargo trailer, you will most likely need to take multiple trips in order to move everything.
While it may be tempting to try to stuff as much as you can into the trailer at once, bear in mind that exceeding your cargo trailer’s set weight limits isn’t just dangerous, it’s illegal. If you’re not sure whether your cargo trailer is overburdened or not, use a truck scale like those found at highway weigh stations.
2. Keep Cargo Balanced & Secured
Securing your cargo will help prevent trailer sway and keep your valuables safe during transit. Use rope, ratchet straps, or D-rings to keep your belongings in place. Proper weight distribution is also important. Too much weight on one side of the trailer can cause a tire blowout, so you should try to balance the weight as evenly as you can from left to right. When it comes to balancing weight from front to back, ideally 60% should be in the front while 40% is in the back.
3. Drive With Care
Driving with a full cargo trailer can be a challenge, especially for the inexperienced. Avoid sudden maneuvers like rapid lane changes. You should also stick to about 10 MPH below the posted speed limit and increase your following distance. Do what you can to signal your intentions to other motorists, and try to avoid adverse conditions like high winds if possible.
