Home 5 News 5 Gooseneck Trailers Guide: Frequently Asked Questions

Are you looking at a gooseneck trailer for sale, wondering if it will fulfill your trailer needs? At Silver Moon Trailers, we have a wide variety of options available for you. We hear a lot of questions about gooseneck trailers, though. Do they increase towing capacity? Do you need a CDL before you can use one? And so on.

In this article, you’ll learn the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we hear about gooseneck trailers.

Can You Bumper Pull a Gooseneck Trailer?

You shouldn’t bumper pull a gooseneck trailer. The bumper isn’t designed to hold the amount of weight that a gooseneck trailer can carry, and you’d have to worry about maneuverability. For safety reasons, this is a bad idea.

Does a Gooseneck Increase Towing Capacity?

Yes, one of the main advantages of the gooseneck trailer is that it can tow more than a bumper pull. Goosenecks are generally designed to trucks that need to pull a large amount of weight. This is the opposite of a bumper pull, which is designed for more casual use. You should be able to use a bumper pull on an SUV, for instance.

How much weight you’ll be able to tow will vary based on both the trailer and vehicle you’re using. We’ll explain more in the next section.

How Much Weight Can a Gooseneck Trailer Haul?

The maximum weight that your trailer can handle will be determined mainly by its axles and its tires. Both of these numbers will be provided on the manufacturer. Most gooseneck trailers can handle at least 10,000 pounds, and some of them can handle more than 20,000 pounds.

When buying a gooseneck trailer, you also need to consider the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of your vehicle. This is likely going to be the hard limit that you cannot exceed when towing.

You may choose to get a gooseneck trailer that can tow more than your vehicle. However, when towing, you should never exceed the lowest maximum weight listed by either your trailer or your vehicle.

Do I Need a CDL to Pull a Gooseneck Trailer?

Federal law states that a Commercial Driver’s License will be required if the gooseneck trailer can tow more than 10,000 pounds, and it has more than one axle. This describes the majority of gooseneck trailers, so you will probably need to get a CDL. If you’re unsure whether or not the trailer you’re buying will require a CDL, ask one of our on-site trailer experts.

Do Gooseneck Trailers Need Safety Chains?

Yes, you need to have safety chains for your gooseneck trailer. This helps protect both you and your fellow drivers on the road.
