Dump Trailer Buying Guide

Home 5 News 5 Dump Trailer Buying Guide

While all dump trailers share a few common design features, that does not mean that all models are the same. Slight variations can make a model better or worse for a particular purpose, so it is important to understand what features are available and which of those features are best suited to your purposes. That’s why Silver Moon Trailers has created this guide to buying a dump tailor.

Size

Dump trailers vary in size from model to model. Most are about 14 feet long, but some are as small as 8 feet long or as large as 20 feet long. While purchasing a larger trailer will help minimize the number of trips you need to take in order to get the job done, longer trailers are also heavier and more difficult to tow. Bear in mind that a heavier trailer can actually limit the amount of cargo you can transport at one time without exceeding your tow vehicle’s maximum carry weight. Have a good understanding of how much your tow vehicle can handle before you purchase a dump trailer.

Lift

Dump trailer lifting mechanisms come in several types, with telescopic lifts, dual-pistons, and scissor lifts being the most common. Scissor lifts tend to offer more power, but are also more expensive to maintain, so you can go with a telescopic lift or dual-piston model if raw power isn’t as important to you. Regardless of which mechanism you choose, try to find a model that is gravity down rather than power down if possible. Power down tends to drain battery charge quickly.

Axles

Bent axles/spindles are one of the most common maintenance issues when it comes to dump trailers, and unfortunately, they are also among the most expensive to repair. While bigger axles can handle more weight, they also usually require heavy-duty wheels, more wheel studs, and bigger brakes.

Ramps

When it comes to ramps, you have several storage options, including underneath the bed, at the side of the box, or built right into the tailgate.
