While there are many reasons why a trailer may require a visit to our service department, you may be surprised by how often the damage is caused by a towing mistake. Such mistakes are perfectly understandable, but since most trailer owners use their trailers as a part of their business, a period of maintenance means time and money lost. Luckily, many of these towing mistakes are avoidable if you know what to do. That is why Silver Moon Trailers has put together this guide to trailer towing mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Poorly Distributing Cargo Weight
Uneven cargo distribution can cause everything from trailer sway to tire blowouts, leading to a serious accident. To avoid these things, always balance your cargo weight from left to right. You should also keep 60% of the weight towards the front of your trailer and 40% of the weight towards the rear. Learn your vehicle’s and trailer’s gross vehicle weight ratings using the ownership manual, and take care never to exceed them.
2. Neglecting Brake Maintenance
Poorly maintained trailer brakes can become so worn that they smoke or even burst into flames when too much strain is placed upon them. Regularly check your trailer’s brake system to ensure that the brakes are properly adjusted and the brake shoes aren’t worn down.
3. Avoid Putting Engines Into Overdrive
Some truck models have an overdrive feature that provides the vehicle with an extra boost. It may be tempting to use this feature to help get you and your heavy trailer over inclines in particularly hilly areas. However, doing so strains the transmission and can lead to overheating. For the sake of your vehicle, stick within your engine’s powerband.
4. Driving on Bad Tires
Tires may not seem like a major concern when it comes to maintenance. However, underinflated or overinflated tires are far more likely to fail while towing a trailer. In addition, worn tires get less traction. Before you set out, make sure the tires on both your trailer and your tow vehicle have the manufacturer-recommended tire pressure and sufficient tread depth to get you where you are going.
5. Failing to Lubricate
A lack of proper lubrication can cause your trailer’s moving parts to freeze up or be damaged by friction. Make sure your trailer’s axles and bearings get regular greasing, along with any pivot points. You should also make sure that your tongue jack is properly lubricated at all times.
