5 Things To Consider Before Buying Car Hauler Trailers

Home 5 News 5 5 Things To Consider Before Buying Car Hauler Trailers

Whether you are moving your car to a new place or transporting a broken-down vehicle to a garage, you need a car trailer. A car trailer, either open or enclosed, is a four-wheel carrier equipped with an easy-access loading ramp to hold the vehicle off the ground. Since the towed car sits on the trailer, it will have very little wear and tear. They are a much better option than two-wheel dollies for long-distance moves.

Here are five things to consider before buying car hauler trailers:

#1 Open vs enclosed

When the weather is nice, and the sun is bright, an open car trailer can safely transport your vehicle from one place to the other. These trailers cost less as compared to enclosed ones. Since less material is required to construct them, the manufacturing costs are less. Due to their open features, they are lightweight and can be towed around easily. They are easy to load and unload, making them the best choice for emergency situations and transporting damaged cars. Since open trailers offer more visibility, they allow the driver to check the condition of the cars every now and then.

Enclosed car trailers are most suited for high-end sports and luxury cars. The biggest advantage they offer is from inclement weather conditions such as rain, snow and ice, and road elements. Such weather can easily damage the exterior of your car. If you want to hide the identity of your expensive car, then an enclosed trailer will serve your purpose. Here your car is safe, and there’s no need to tie items to the trailer. These trailers come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, making it easier to transport different types of equipment. While a multi-car trailer can load up to seven vehicles, the single or two-car trailers are more expensive and often used for express deliveries or shipping vehicles to auto shows or auctions.

#2 Deck length

The deck length of standard car trailers varies from 14-24 feet. A 16-foot trailer can accommodate most cars and is not difficult to tow. Flatbed trailers are used for 16-20 feet long, and enclosed trailers fall in the range of 20-24 feet. The smallest enclosed trailer comes in 8’ X 16’ size and is large enough to haul a single-vehicle easily.

#3 Trailer weight

When a car trailer is unloaded, it usually weighs between 1,500 and 3,000 pounds. The average is 1,900 pounds. When loaded, their weight can reach as much as 36,000 pounds. Factors such as its construction, length, and style will determine the weight of a car trailer. A double-car gooseneck trailer could weigh over 15,000 pounds. It must be noted that aluminum car trailer weight and capacity will vary greatly from steel. If you are buying a 2 car trailer, you need to know first how much the weight of the cars would be on average, and then only you would be able to buy the best car carrying trailer.

#4 Aluminum vs steel

While aluminum trailers cost a bit more than steel trailers, they are a significant long-term investment as they are resistant to corrosion and last longer. Just because you choose steel, it doesn’t mean you are buying something inferior. Steel trailers are durable, provided you protect them from rust. For instance, a 30-foot aluminum trailer might only weigh 8,500 pounds than 10,000-plus for steel. It must be noted that steel is far less likely to flex and bend under load.

#5 Important components

Choose a trailer that has the axle behind the load center as it gives stability to the trailer. The trailer's rear bumper should be larger as it is where you’ll be doing the bulk of your loading and unloading. Select tyres with a rating that matches that of the trailer capacity. The trailer should have a longer tongue as it gives flexibility and more control when towing your load.
